Sussex v Kent 14/06/2026

Kent made the trip to Sussex for what promised to be a significant day across all divisions, with league positions beginning to take shape at the halfway point of the season. It proved to be a mixed but largely positive day for the Kent squads, with six wins or draws from eight matches.

Over 50s

The Over 50s came into this fixture at the top of the table with four wins from four, and against a Sussex side sitting third with a solid record of their own, this was always going to be a tough away day. It proved to be a fiercely competitive affair that fully reflected the quality of both teams. Kent edged the first set 6:5 to make a positive start, only for Sussex to level things up by taking the second set 6:5 and bringing the scores to 11:11 at the halfway point.

The third set proved the pivotal one, with Sussex making their move and winning it 7:4 to lead 18:15 going into the final set. With their unbeaten record on the line, Kent needed a response and duly delivered, taking the fourth set 7:4 to haul the match level and earn a hard-fought 22:22 draw.

Barry Johnson, Chris Freelove and Adrian Read all contributed 3/4 on the day. The draw means Kent remain top of the Over 50s division on 13 points, four clear of Hampshire in second, with five matches still to play. A strong platform from which to push for the title in the second half of the season.

Over 60s

The Over 60s continued their impressive form with a commanding 8:4 win. John Fowler got things off to the perfect start, with Kent taking the first set 2:1. The second set went the same way to extend the lead to 4:2, before a dominant third set saw Kent sweep it 3:0 and move into a 7:2 lead. Sussex won two of the final three frames to make the score 8:4, but this was a thoroughly professional performance. Andy Gee was outstanding with a perfect 4/4, with John Paul Fowler adding 3/4.

The win keeps Kent second in the Over 60s on 10 points, just one behind leaders Berkshire who remain unbeaten on 11. With five matches remaining for both sides, the second half of the season sets up as a fascinating battle at the top.

Under 23s

The Under 23s produced another composed performance to win 11:9 and maintain their unbeaten run. They hit the ground running with an emphatic first set of 4:1, winning the opening four frames before Sussex got one back. A second set of 3:2 extended the lead to 7:3 at halfway, and Kent took the third set 3:2 to move into a commanding 10:5 position. Sussex made a real fight of the final set, winning it 4:1 to close the gap to 11:9, but Kent had done more than enough. Jake Lloyd was outstanding with a perfect 4/4, with Olly Mitchell backing him up with 3/4.

Kent sit top of the Under 23s on 12 points from four matches, five clear of Surrey in second. With four matches still to play, it is still all to play for in the division, but Kent are in a fine position to push on from here.

Under 18s

The junior team put in another confident display to win 21:15, continuing their impressive development this season. A strong opening set of 6:3 gave them the platform they needed. Sussex pulled things back to 10:8 in the second set, but the third saw Kent reassert themselves to lead 16:11. Sussex continued to push in the final set but Kent closed it out well to win 21:15. Mason Coles was again outstanding with a maximum 4/4, with Slok Patel and Jack Harding both delivering 3/4.

Kent sit top of the Under 18s on 9 points from just three matches played, with Sussex and Hampshire both on 7 points from four. With five matches still to come, there is plenty of the season remaining, but this is an excellent start.

Ladies

The Kent Ladies produced another strong collective performance to win 25:19 and maintain their 100% record. Sussex edged the first set 6:5, but that was as good as it got for the home side as Kent hit back with a dominant second set, winning it 9:2 to lead 15:7 at halfway. Sussex showed spirit to take the third set 6:5 and close the gap to 20:13, but Kent had enough in reserve to take the fourth set 5:6 and run out 25:19 winners. [Captain Julie or any team member may wish to add colour on the key moments of the comeback.] Jan Spinner was the star performer with a superb 4/4, with Erin Gannon, Mel Clements, Jo Miles and Hollie Potter all delivering 3/4 — a real team effort.

Kent Ladies sit top of their division on a perfect 15 points from five matches, three clear of Hampshire in second. A brilliant halfway-point position, though with five matches still to play Hampshire and others will be looking to close the gap.

A Team

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Kent A team, who fell to a 23:21 defeat in a match that swung back and forth and could easily have gone either way. Sussex edged the first set 6:5 and extended their advantage in the second to lead 12:10 at halfway. The third set was where the match got away from Kent, with Sussex taking it 8:3 to move into a 20:13 lead. To their credit, Kent showed real character in the final set, winning it 8:3 to make it 21:23, but just fell short of completing what would have been a remarkable comeback.

Despite the defeat, the individual records tell an encouraging story — Jake Lloyd was exceptional with 4/4, and Jasper Simmonds, Mitch Standen and Pat Cunningham all delivered 3/4. The quality is clearly there in this group. The loss leaves Kent A third in the Open A division on 7 points, three behind leaders Surrey and two adrift of Berkshire, but with five matches remaining there is still plenty to play for.

B Team

The B team bounced back from the Berkshire defeat with a thoroughly convincing 27:17 win. They set the tone early with a first set of 7:4, followed by a dominant second set of 8:3 to lead 15:7 at halfway. The third set continued in the same vein, Kent winning it 6:5 to lead 21:12, before closing out the fourth set 6:5 for a 27:17 final score. It was a professional performance from start to finish. Gavin Webb led the way with an excellent 4/4, backed up by Steve Ritchie, George Taylor, James Goldsmith and Paul Williams who all contributed 3/4.

Kent B sit second in the Open B division on 12 points, one behind Berkshire who lead on 13, both having played five matches. A very tight race at the top with five matches still to come for each side — the second half of the season should be a compelling watch.

C Team

The C team will be disappointed to come away with a 20:24 defeat in what was a closely contested match throughout. Sussex edged the first set 6:5 before the second set was shared to leave the scores level at 11:11 at halfway. Sussex nudged ahead in the third to lead 17:16, and proved just strong enough to take the final set 7:3 for a 24:20 victory. [Chris Freelove may wish to reflect on where the match was lost and what the team takes into the second half of the season.] Ritchie Bell was the standout performer with 3/4 on the day.

Despite the defeat, Kent C remain top of the Open C division on 12 points, three ahead of Surrey in second, with five matches remaining. A solid halfway-point position, but with Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire all in contention, the second half promises to be competitive.
