Surrey v Kent 08/03/2026

Spots and Stripes Surrey provided the Kent teams with a positive environment to demonstrate their strength and depth across the categories, and a chance for the new-look squad to build on their successes on matchday 1.

Over 50s

First up were the Kent Seniors, who had to reshuffle their pack a little due to the absence of Barbara Taylor (bereavement) and Bill Rase (hand surgery). Wilbo had reviewed last year’s fixture and asked the team to go about reversing the 25:19 loss from last year, while maintaining their good start to the season. The team went 2:0 down at the start, but five frames in a row from Ian Kettel (who came in to support Wilbo and his team after losing Barbara and Bill), Richard Smith, Wilbo, Barry Johnson and Graham Thrower turned it around to 5:2. The set finished 6:5 to the Kent Seniors. A 7:4 second set win took the score to 13:9 at the halfway point.

Now, one of the things I have asked all my teams to think about is the momentum of the game, and for players to recognise when something needs to change to shift that momentum back to us. The seniors team have had a number of lapses in concentration over the last couple of years, sometimes losing 3, 4 or 5 frames in a row, which can effectively turn matches. So our third-set Achilles heel was to be focused upon, and taking it 6:5 set us up to be in the driving seat for the win. A fourth-set 7:4 win sealed the victory, with Barry Johnson delivering the winning frame at 23:17 before the match ended 25:19, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season and leaving them six points better off than at the same stage last year. Ian Kettel delivered 4/4, with Willie Anderson, Barry Johnson, Chris Freelove and Adrian Read (newbies) all delivering 3/4 for the team. Thanks to Bill for keeping the scoresheet and keeping Barbara updated throughout the match.

Over 60s

The over-60s also remain undefeated after two matches and stamped their authority on this match from the start by winning the first set 3:0. John Paul Fowler started the ball rolling and was ably followed by Andy Gee and Andy Redsull. The second set ended 4:2, with the Surrey team mounting a fightback. Kent took the third set 2:1 to finish 6:3 up after three sets, before delivering another clean sweep to take the match 9:3. Andy Redsull was top performer on the day with a full house, 4/4.

Under 23s

Our under-23s, led by Jake Lloyd, were starting their season at Surrey due to having no game against Hampshire. They pretty much started how they left off last year, with a comfortable 14:6 win, which was never really in doubt after taking the first set emphatically 4:1. Frames by Jake Lloyd, James Goldsmith, Callum Britt and Finley O’Shaughnessy made the frame score 4:0 before Surrey took the last frame of the set. The second and third sets followed a familiar pattern, with two further 4:1 sets before the Surrey team won the final set for a bit of respectability. Top performers were James Goldsmith, Finley O’Shaughnessy and Michael Cairns with 3/4. In addition to this result, we have just had the inter-county finals, where both James Goldsmith and Ollie Mitchell have qualified to represent England Under-23s in the international set-up, so congratulations to you both from all at the KCPA.

Under 18s

The junior team manager, Lee Crowhurst, is genuinely excited by our juniors in terms of their current ability and their potential for growth. This also includes leadership and sportsmanship, and Lee has shared a comment from the Surrey junior manager following the match.

Apparently, team captain Liam McGrath stepped in to allow a frame to continue, even though there was a technical foul from a very young player. Rather than call the foul, the frame continued, with the young player being educated about the rules in that situation. Well done, Liam.

“Really nice message I got from Jason, team manager for Surrey juniors. This perfectly represents what we are trying to shape with the Kent juniors… respect first, results second.”

Great win again from this rapidly developing team of respectful, supportive young players. 4/4 from Mason, 4/4 from Slok—that’s 8/8 for Slok now—and 3/4 from Jack to bring home a 21:15 win.

Proud manager 😁❤️🎱

Ladies

Our ladies went into the match with Surrey very much with their thoughts with Barbara over the loss of her mum. Jools and the team were determined to give something to cheer about and to raise spirits, knowing they were missing Barbs’ 80% stats from last year. The ladies took the first set 7:4, with a five-frame burst from 2:1 down to 6:2 up—Jo Miles, Hannah Bevan, Erin Gannon, Karen Riches and Julie Fane setting the standard.

The second set was closer, with Kent Ladies edging it 6:5 to retain a 13:9 halfway lead. Another 7:4 winning set seemed to put the match beyond doubt, but at 20:12 there was a bit of a comeback from the Surrey ladies when they won the first five frames of the final set to pull close at 20:18. Up stepped one of our most experienced female players, Mel Clements, to stop that momentum swing, before our youngest player, Erin Gannon, took us to 22. Another experienced player, Karen Riches, then claimed the winning frame. 23 became 25:19, and the ladies have seen off probably their two closest rivals for the title in the first two games.

Kent Ladies are already top of the league by three points at this early stage, and I fancy they will be pretty hard to catch. Top performer with 4/4 was our new England Ladies qualifier, Erin Gannon, and our congratulations go to her for her achievement at such a young age. Fifteen of the 20 frames were also won by some of the most capped ladies of our time—Mel Clements, Vanessa Ledger, Captain Fane, Karen Riches and Jan Spinner—all getting 3/4 on the day. Who says experience doesn’t pay!

So, 5/5 matches won, with the opens to come.

A Team

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great day for the Kent A side, falling to a talented Surrey side by 29:15. Surrey won all four sets 7:4, 7:4, before taking the third set 9:2 to seal the match, then the final set 6:5 to take top spot in the table. Metin Tomris and Jake Lloyd both won 3/4 on the day, but I’m sure this team will find a way back into this year’s race for the nationals, starting next game at home to London.

B Team

The B team took time to get going in this fixture, going 3:1 down before getting things together to win the first set 6:5 and the second set 7:4, taking a healthy 13:9 lead at the halfway point. This team has been told of the ambitions, with both myself and Captain Faz believing it to be an extremely strong side, with eight of the players having played A-team pool in the last six months. The team seem relaxed with this expectation, and the dynamics were certainly full of confidence throughout, with a great deal of quality on show.

Another four frames at the start of the third set by Steve Ritchie, Steve Mullins, Ash Hind and Paul Williams extended that lead, and from there it was only a matter of time before the match was won. Steve Ritchie claimed the winning frame at 23:13 before the team ran out 28:16 winners to remain unbeaten. No fewer than seven players delivered 3/4: Paul Williams, Steve Mullins, Steve Ritchie, Gavin Webb, Finley O’Shaughnessy, Farron Rowe and James Goldsmith.

C Team

Finally, in the C team, they raced to a 5:1 early lead before taking the first set 8:3. A five-frame burst from 11:6 to 15:6 made it look all over, but Surrey had other ideas. They took the third set 8:4 to pull the scores to 18:15, before remarkably pulling level at 20:20. However, Olly Mitchell stopped the rot to take a 21:20 lead, before Darren Hill made it 22:20. Callum Britt then sealed the match, before the old wise G Unit used all his experience to end the match with four frames in a row to finally end Surrey’s resistance. The final score: 24:20.

Manager Phil Harrison said he learned a lot about certain individuals during the match and feels the ability to come through the game in the way they did, following the Surrey comeback, shows good potential for the team. 3/4 for Andre Cox, Chris Freelove, Graham Thrower, Callum Britt and Darren Hill.

So, 7 team wins out of a possible 8 evidences strength across the board and leaves many of our teams top of the league or level on points.

See you all in a couple of weeks at home to London, where we can enhance our reputation as a very strong county this season.

Regards,
Wilbo

Kent v Hampshire 08/02/2026

Kent’s season gets off to an unbeaten start!

It must be said that most seasons bring a sense of renewed optimism but this season was perhaps more so because as much had happened between the end of last season and the beginning of this one in terms of additions to most of the teams . So the optimism was based on knowing the teams had been strengthened along with that mutual desire amongst the captains to compete to the very best of their team’s abilities.

So a word about each of my captains before we describe what happened on the first day of the season . Our ladies captain Jools Fane , one of the most experienced captains any county could have … decades of experience in leading her teams and decades of winning title after title , you would think there was nothing else to prove , but you would have to think again ! Jools still has the desire to win and of course when Hampshire wrestled the title from the ladies last year I can tell you that Jools wants it back and what better than Hampshire themselves coming to Chatham for the first game of the season. Wonder how that went ?
Contrary to the experience that Jools has our A team captain Jasper Simmonds at only 24 years old is learning the leadership game and with Dave Fernandez by his side I’m sure Jasper will discover the nuances required to support players to deliver their best performance as he grows into his role . It’s no secret that as team manager I want Kent County Pool to be a success so I have worked with Jasper alongside Farron Rowe to try and find the right players in the teams to challenge for every title ! Let’s see how that goes in ten matches time .
Farron Rowe B team captain knows what’s required to win regional and national titles and he’s hungry for more . Winning back the region is his priority and with almost a whole new B team he understands that gelling quickly is key. He has the passion and desire to get the best out of players and is becoming a highly respected leader within this group of players . I decided this year to introduce a C team manager to work with the C team captain Chris Freelove . Chris is an experienced player , improving in my opinion and is also now qualified for my seniors team so he has a lot on his plate to captain the C s and deliver his best for the seniors but he will cope , of that have no doubt . So Chris is showing the ropes to Phil Harrison our new recruit as C team manager . Phil is a popular figure around the Medway league and does love his pool , watching , organising flyers and tournaments and even occasionally bringing out that lovely cue of his to keep his game sharp! 🙂 . As you might know we use our C team to integrate our over – age juniors into the adult game and I felt I needed someone who could support that element of the team making sure the development of players was being overseen . Thank you Phil for agreeing to take on this role and I know you feel you have a team that can win the C region title .
Liam McGrath is our Junior Captain in his final year . In terms of maturity Liam has all the experience needed to help the new much younger players into the junior team and I am sure the players will develop within his team . Mason Coles is Liam’s vice captain and will enjoy learning that side of the game to add to his undoubted talents on the table . Lee Crowhurst knows the juniors are in a bit of a transition period after having 6 players age out in one season but Lee has said for me not to be surprised if this group of juniors learn quickly as they are hungry to improve !
Jake LLoyd is in his second year of captaining the under 23 s after leading the team to regional success last year and what I know about Jake is that he can get his message over more often with one word or one liner ! Jake is also now within the A team structure so again can demonstrate what hard work and commitment can achieve .
Our Masters captain John Paul Fowler , also a valuable member of the Committee , captained the masters to 2 nd place in his first season and is taking his team to nationals . JPF has maintained his game on the table and I know wants the opportunity to improve on second position last year .
So that just leaves our seniors captain – Willie Anderson , pretty new to the game , not won much , quiet lad with not much to say but I’m sure he’ll come out of his shell at some point and try his best . The alternative is a Nottingham Forest type sacking .

So that’s the leadership team striving for success in 2026 so what about the teams …

First to kick off the new season was Willie Anderson’s senior team . Now it was only on the last game of last season that the seniors team led 22-17 and needed one frame to qualify for nationals but sadly that wasn’t to be as the game ended up 22-22 pushing the seniors into 3 rd .
This year , like ourselves , many teams have strengthened their squad and it looked like Hampshire had too , adding a certain Jason Toovey to the team . So the ask from Wilbo was to improve on last years start ( 3 losses) and to correct the result of last time .

Kent raced into a 4-1 early lead and finished off 8-3 in front. This included Chris Freelove winning his first seniors frame with a great clearance . Hampshire , also with a certain Stephen Parker on the side rallied in the second set with a 7-4 win taking the scores to 12-10 at the halfway stage . It felt like we were playing well but a couple of loose shots snookering ourselves on final blacks had given Hampshire hope . A few frames later it was 13-12 but rather than fold it was time to play some good pool .
Steve Jepson and Willie Anderson took the score to 15 -12 and then Adrian Read playing his first frame ( after turning up late and in jeans and trainers !!) , Barry Johnson Bill Rase and Barbara Taylor meant the score after the third set was 19-14 . Marc Brazier clinched the match with a tidy finish and the seniors went on to complete a 25-19 win , a great start to the day . Top performers on the day were Marc Brazier , Barry Johnson , Willie Anderson and Barbara Taylor with 3/4 !

In the masters match They lost the first frame before John Fowler and Andy Redsull made it 2-1. This soon became 3-1 as Andy Gee got off the mark for the season .
However Hampshire pulled the next two frames back to go 3-3.
Hampshire then took the 3 rd set 2-1 to take a 5-4 lead .
New masters player Jez Weaver pulled the match back to 5-5 before the last 2 frames were shared to end the match 6-6. All 4 Kent players had a 50/50 record on the day .

There was no under 23 match so the afternoon matches were next .

Kent A had wanted a good start but a new-look Hampshire side were first to take the initiative by striding into a 4-0 lead . Jasper Simmonds Sean Kirby and Dave Fernandez fought back to take the next three frames but couldn’t stop the visitors taking a 7-4 lead after the first set . That soon became 8-4 before a burst of winning frames ( 8/10) meant the Kent team reached halfway with a 12-10 lead . One would have expected the Kent A team to go on from this but the Hampshire side , not here to make the numbers up levelled the match again at 14-14 . At this point it was difficult trying to gauge what was going to happen next in this see saw of a game . Dave Fernandez, Josh Patel ,Aaron Bhat, Jake Lloyd and Jamie Gamble on his return to the A team took the last 5 frames to end the set 19-14 and looked again to have broken the Hampshire resistance ….. not at all !!! Hampshire then took all of the first 7 frames in the final set to take a 21-19 lead and for all the world it looked like Kent A were on the ropes ! But another three frames on the bounce took them into the position of 22-21 with the last frame to go … however just like this match had taken twists and turns in every set , the match ended up in a thrilling 22-22 draw .
Lots then for Jasper to think about re this flamboyant Kent team before the next match . Star performers on the day for Kent with 3/4 were Dave Fernandez , Josh Patel , Aaron Bhat and Jake Lloyd.

B Report

So the season got underway with the new look B team and they were provided a stern test in a much improved Hampshire B side. Seemingly all across the region everyone has strengthened during the off season.

It was immediately clear any idea of Kent dominating were dispelled as they took a tight set 6-5. The team then showed more quality than their opponents taking the second set 8-3 to lead 14-8 at the halfway stage. A slight wobble where Hampshire duly punished a few errors meant going into the last set Kent lead 17-16.

Captain Farron Rowe was pleased with the resilience and skill shown in the last set which lead Kent to win the first 5 frames in a row to put them on the hill which Jamie O’ Donnell duly obliged to take the opportunity in the winning frame ensuring Kent got their season off with a strong win 24-20

Mullins carrying on from last season where he left off with 4/4 I’m sure it won’t be long before the As come calling.

Other notable mentions our new faces in George Taylor and Paul Williams winning their first frames for the county will prove steady foundations for a successful season. James (Goldie) pulling off a remarkable cocked hat and clearance was pure class at a pivotal moment in the game. And finally it was a joy to welcome Finley (Brylcreem) into the team and he has shown already he has all the hallmarks to be an influential character in the Bs. Willie Anderson in his twilight years added much experience and ensured the Bs never lost focus. He settled in well and clearly enjoyed himself serenading the Bs halfway through his frame with Penny Arcade ( apparently the Rangers anthem ) – not that his thick Scottish accent allowed for any of us to know what he was singing 😉

Off the table Farron was extremely buoyed by the teams bond and camaraderie in their first outing and if Sunday afternoon was anything to go by the region are in trouble both on and off the table.

Fantastic afternoon all round and can’t wait for next match v Surrey.

A good start from the C team, a 25 -19 win against a very decent team. Chris Freelove set out the order and Phil Horley got us underway with our first win straight away, he followed that winning his next 3 frames, the two new young players that have joined the team,Micheal Cairns and Olly Mitchell showed real maturity and both won 3 from 4. A great performance from new to the county, Darren Hill who also took 3 from 4,
Considering this was the first time this team has played together the support and effort from the whole team was excellent and I see as we move on, we will become even stronger.

The eagerly anticipated ladies match looked to show all the hallmarks of a tough match if the first set was anything to go by . Kent went 1-0 then 5-2 up only for Hampshire to draw level at 5-5 before clinching the last frame of the set for a 6-5 lead .
The second set was even tighter with Kent drawing level at 6-6 through Mel Clements before Hampshire made it 8-7 with Erin Gannon this time bringing it back to 8-8 . Then it became 9-9 , 10-10 and yes you guessed it 11-11 at the halfway point with captain Jools taking the team to a 6-5 winning set . The third set 12-12 ,13-13 before something different happened and that was Kent winning 3 crucial frames in a row through Erin Gannon, Barbara Taylor and Karen Riches . That breathing space meant the third set finished 18-15 to the Kent ladies . But guess what …. Yes three frames in a row from Hampshire took the match to 18-18 with all to play for in the next 8 frames . Hannah Bevan stepped forward once again to put the Kent ladies in front before the match was again levelled at 19-19. Barbara Taylor , Karen Riches and Karen Derby , returning to the side seemed to at long last break the resistance of the Hampshire ladies at this point as they took all 3 frames to take a 22-19 lead before Hampshire made it 22-20. Waiting in the wings for Kent were two of the most experienced players you would want in Vanessa Ledger and Captain Jools …. So cool, calm and collected they took both those frames to win the match 24-20 and to take a giant step towards grappling back their regional title . Well done ladies it must have been an awesome game to be involved in and well done Hampshire for contributing to such an exciting match . Best performers on the day were Mel Clements Barbara Taylor Erin Gannon and Julie Fane all with 3/4 but Kaz Riches eclipsing them all with 4/4 .

If we thought the excitement had finished for the day the juniors still had something to contribute ! You remember I said this was a team in transition and wasn’t expecting too much this season apart fulmar developing as a team …. Well this team seem to have formed, stormed, normed and performed in one match ! Exasperating to say the least .
So this is the new look junior team : Liam McGrath , Mason Coles , Jack Harding , Alfie Richards , Slok Patel , Jamie Baird , Alfie Hearn , Harrison Guichard , Ollie Smith and Alfie Kingsnorth- watch out for these guys !

So Captain McGrath stepped up to make it 1-0 before the Hampshire side made it 2-1 and 5-3 , Mason Coles making sure the first set ended up only 5-4 down . Another tight set in the second where Hampshire again took the spoils 5-4 … this is what we were expecting wasn’t it ? Our juniors coming together for the first time and learning the game and putting up a contest , not the worst and it’s all about learning and developing is it not? However that 10-8 scoreline quickly became 10-10 as Liam McGrath and Jack Harding won the first two frames of the third set … could we be about to take the lead in the third set ? Unfortunately not as Hampshire also took the third set 5-4 to lead 15-12 with the final set looming . Kent amazingly started to perform with the first three frames being won to take the match score to 15-15 ! Could we be about to take the lead ? Again not as Hampshire lead 16-15 , with 5 frames to go…. Well, Kent pull it back to 16-16 before going 17-16 up , amazing stuff . What’s even more amazing is that our juniors lost the first three sets 5-4 before winning the final set 7-2 with Mason winning the final frame for a 19-17 victory . So it seems this junior team , newly formed have got something special in their locker.
Lee Crowhurst told me he had just watched an incredible match with high drama and high excitement with the players loving it . Well that’s what it’s all about that age well done all the junior team for a great win on your first match as a team . All top performers today with a special mention for Slok Patel with a fabulous 4/4 ! Great stuff .

So there we have it , the room was buzzing today where we have a great venue in Chatham Pool and Snooker Club to play our matches . With 8 Rasson tables and most matches streamed live we are lucky to have the best environment to play the game we enjoy . The county squad all wearing their new shirts and some with jackets , the dandruff is at last removed and the season started off well with wins for the seniors , ladies , juniors , B and C team and draws for the A and Masters, therefore something to build on for the rest of the season . See you all on 8 th March at Spots and Stripes ( Surrey) .

Finally best wishes to our players who will be attending the European Championships in Cyprus from 20th -28th February . Best of luck to you all !

Kent County Pool Squad 2026

As Kent County Pool Team Manager I am incredibly proud of everything we have achieved since I took over 7 years ago. The support from the committee , captains and players has made my job easier and we have delivered countless happy memories for many players and teams , so congratulations to all for being part of a successful county pool set up during my tenure. Outside of the many regional titles over these 7 years we have also achieved National Titles across the categories . The men’s A and B have won national titles alongside our Ladies , our Juniors x2 and our Under 23’s .

However 2025 was a year of mixed fortunes by our high standards with three teams winning their respective categories , three finishing as runners up and two finishing 3 rd .
The junior team and under 23 s evidenced our youth policies are effective by finishing top of their divisions. We look forward to supporting these players develop their pool experiences further in the future through an agreement between the committee and Dave Fernandez ( ultimate Pool Professional, Kent A team player and Seasoned England internationalist ) to provide coaching to our juniors.

Some of our youth players have been promoted into the Open divisions to give them an opportunity to exhibit their skill set at a higher level . Finlay O’Shaughnessy has joined James Goldsmith in the B team with captain Farron Rowe keen to snap him up .
Ollie Mitchell, Kieren Bruce and Michael Cairns are also stepping up and into the C team .

Our other winning team was our C team , captained by the departing Paul Cox . I was delighted to see Paul finish his county career with an incredible 1400 caps on the final game of the season . We would like to thank Paul for everything he has done for Kent Pool and congratulate him for everything he has achieved over 4 decades. Best wishes for the future and enjoy your lie ins on a Sunday morning .
Our B team , ladies team and newly formed masters teams all finished second and I know already that Julie Fane and Farron Rowe are intending to try and wrestle those Regional titles back to Kent. John Paul Fowler will be keen to maintain the masters team good start and has added Jez Weaver to his squad this year.

Our A team finished 3 rd and on reflection it was a challenging year for them and the B team as we went through a significant period of transition .
Spare a thought for our seniors team who started the season with 3 losses then moved from the bottom to the top of the league with 5 wins in a row only to be leading 22-17 in the final game to lose all 5 final frames and lose out on national qualification by a frame . I remember speaking to Dylan Leary at the euros about hard knocks and battle scars and that certainly was another one added to my personal file . But we go again in 2026 .

So before announcing our 2026 squads , I would like to thank all our past and present players for putting the Kent County Pool Association on the Regional, National , European and World map.!
Many Kent players , past and present , have used this county stepping stone to then go on and start winning titles for their countries at European and World level.
It is our combined ambition to continue that trend moving forward especially for some of our juniors , still learning the game .
But it’s never too late as they say as Andy Redsull ( England ) represented his country for the first time ever at the World Championships and returned with a World Team Title in the over 60 s .
Lee Crowhurst represented Scotland seniors team at the World championships , also in 2025 , and is on his way to Cyprus in a few weeks to the Europeans .
In the past we have had players like Carl Morris and his brother Kurt representing their country while playing for Kent alongside a host of others. You might remember some but have you heard of them all ? They all have the same thing in common in that they played for their country while playing for Kent .

Apologies if I’ve missed someone obvious ……

So the 2026 season brings a new look to the squad following a review of our ambition. It is our combined objective to prepare squads that can challenge at National level every year moving forward . I recognise that our juniors may have a year of transition as no less than 6 players aged out this year . But we have talent coming through and that is a combined effort across Kent including the development of some fine pool environments across the county where these youngsters can play the game they love in a safe environment with experienced pool owners looking over them . I think you would be hard pressed to find another county with 6 top class pool venues . So Kent pool is thriving with all these factors and it is with this in mind that the standards are being set high . We are thriving on and off the table , are financially able to support Kent Pool for example contributing to nationals accommodation for last 3 years with our Finance Lead always looking for opportunities to invest our finances in the Kent footprint .

From the Committee and myself , I would like to wish all of our players the best of luck in this upcoming season. Sussex v Kent 12/10/2025

Match Report

A Team

A result was needed for the A team following their previous loss against Surrey to keep nationals qualification alive. A strong start from Pat, Bass, and Paul Williams sent the team into a 3:0 lead, but several uncharacteristic mistakes led to a 7:4 deficit after the first set.

The following two sets also proved difficult, which saw us trail 20:13 going into the last 11 frames. From 22:15 down, some hope was still alive, winning the next six frames to make it 22:21 and take it to a final-frame decider for the draw. Jake took an excellent finish out, but a miraculous bounce-out on his last ball left Sussex with a few roll-ins for the win — a horrible end to a long match.

Still, there were some positives to take, with an excellent performance from Indian international Aaron Bhat in his first game back in the A team this season. There were also solid performances from O’Donnell and Bassoo, both winning 3/4.

There is still hope going into the last match at home to Hampshire to finish in the top two for a spot at nationals.

B Team

The B team needed to win this match to take top spot and started brightly, taking a 2:0 lead. However, seven frames in a row from Sussex meant Kent were 7:2 down on their way to a 7:4 first-set loss. The Sussex team won the next set 6:5 to extend their lead. The third set went a similar way, so moving into the final set Kent were 19:14 down. A good run of frames dragged us back to 22:21, but a final-frame loss meant that Sussex won the league, with Kent finishing second.

Mitchell Standen was player of the day with 4/4.

C Team

An unusual match culminated in a 23:21 win — the strange part being Sussex winning 3:1 in sets, but a great set three, with Kent winning it 9:2, made all the difference.

A lot of missed chances for Kent and the bad run that goes alongside that made the match a close affair. The win, combined with Berkshire surprisingly losing, means the Kent Cs claim their fifth league title in a row — congratulations to the team.

Notable performances on the day came from Bill Rase and Barry Johnson (4/4). A good day too for captain Paul Cox, with 3/4, plus winning the frame that clinched the win on the day.

Although we can all agree it has not been the best season for the Cs, with a lot of player shuffling throughout, the team has ultimately delivered what it set out to do — Regional Champions 2025.

Ladies

The ladies team needed to win this match to maintain second place and secure a place at the nationals — and they delivered that with a comprehensive victory. They took the first set 7:4 and extended that to 16:6 with a terrific second set. Another 8:3 third-set victory took the score to 24:9 going into the final set. A fourth-set win of 7:4 completed their victory, and Jools can now start planning their assault on the nationals once again.

Amy Cook joined Barbara Taylor on 4/4, with Jan Spinner, Julie Fane, Erin Gannon, Jo Miles, Jo Herrington, and Mel Clements all ably supporting with 3/4.

Over 50s

The Over 50s travelled to Sussex knowing a win would keep them at the top of the table and take them to nationals. The first two sets were shared, reaching the halfway point at 11:11. The third set saw some uncharacteristic errors from the team and was lost 8:3.

This left the team with an uphill struggle, and unfortunately, they went on to lose the match 25:19, meaning Kent drop to third. Results now need to go in Kent’s favour to qualify, plus they have to win their last game v Hampshire.

No full houses, but Gary Kingsnorth, Barbara Taylor, and Martin Prime competed well, each winning 3/4.

Juniors

No such problems for our junior team — they had won all five games previously and made it 6/6 with a 25:11 win to deliver the regional title again.

The team were dominant in the first set with an 8:1 win, followed by a 6:3 victory to take a halfway lead of 14:4. Another 6:3 set took it to 20:7, with Olly Mitchell and Michael Cairns claiming 4/4, and Lucas Keepin, Finley O’Shaughnessy, Mason Cole, and Jack Harding all delivering 3/4.

Well done team — get ready for the nationals!

Under 23s

Our Under 23s, led by Jake Lloyd, have now claimed the regional title following their national win last year. They didn’t start off the best, going 3:2 down, before winning all five frames in the second set to take a 7:3 lead. They won the third set 3:2 before another 5:0 set in the last to take the match 15:5.

James Goldsmith went 4/4, with Callum Britt, Jake Lloyd, and Finley O’Shaughnessy each winning 3/4.

Over 60s

Finally, the first Over 60s season has delivered a national qualification for Kent in its first year, with Andy Gee leading the individual regional stats — also with a game to go.

The team went 2:1 up before Sussex pulled back to 3:3. The third set saw all three frames go to Kent for a 6:3 lead before closing in on an 8:4 victory.

Summary

It ended up a disappointing Sunday for Kent as a whole, as we won five matches but lost three crucial games for titles and national qualification. I guess this shows the standards we have for this county.

Next month rounds off the 2025 season, and there are still possibilities of further national qualification, though Kent now have to rely on results from other matches as it’s out of our hands.

A full report of the season will be delivered following next month’s matches. See you all on November 9th for our final match at home v Hampshire.

Best wishes,
Wilbo

Kent v Surrey 14/09/2025

Match Report

Kent v Surrey – National Qualification still possible for all 8 Kent teams

Seniors

Kent Seniors kicked off the day knowing that a fifth consecutive win might be enough to see them go to the top of the table with two games left. No matches are easy in this section, with all teams having good and experienced players within their ranks. The first set was nip and tuck, with the Surrey team taking the early exchange 6:5. They also took the second set to maintain a 12:10 lead at the halfway point. With little things going against the team, including a rather lucky snooker by Robert McGowan on Barry Johnson with the last yellow hanging, it’s safe to say this team last year might have folded.

However, winning games breeds confidence and resilience, and the Kent team have discovered both this year. Kent won the third set 8:3 to move into an 18:15 lead and maintained that momentum into the final set. Dean Coppen nailed a long black to put the team on the brink, and a brilliant black from team captain Willie Anderson sealed the win, with Kent eventually winning 25:19. With Berkshire beating Sussex, this result puts Kent top of the league and within reach of national qualification if they win one of their last two games.

Top performers on the day with 3/4 were Steve Jepson, Graham Thrower, Gary Kingsnorth and Martin Prime.

Under 23s

Jake Lloyd has led his team to national qualification with two matches to spare, giving them the opportunity to retain the title they won last year. A 12:8 win secured this.

The team started a little slowly, losing the first set 3:2. Kent recovered this deficit by the end of the second set before stepping on the gas in the third set to take a 9:6 lead. Kent won the final set 3:2 for the 12:8 victory. Jake Lloyd, James Goldsmith and Finlay O’Shaughnessy delivered 3/4 on the day.

Juniors

Our juniors also secured national qualification with a comprehensive 23:13 win over their Surrey rivals. The opening exchanges were pretty even in the first set (5:4), with the Kent juniors stretching their lead significantly in the second set (8:1) to lead 13:5. The Surrey juniors stayed resilient, winning the third set 5:4, but the Kent team finished the game off in fine style with a 6:3 final set win.

Some great performances on the day that manager Lee Crowhurst was very happy to observe – Olly Mitchell winning 4/4, ably supported by Jack Harding, Kieron Bruce, Finlay O’Shaughnessy and Mason Coles with contributions of 3/4. Clinching the match was Jack Harding.

Over 60s

The Over 60s team, including Andy Redsull fresh from his World Championship win with England, set about enhancing their reputation in the first year of the Over 60s as a division. Andy Gee started with a win and went on to get 4/4 on the day. The team won the first set 2:1, repeated that in the second set to take a 4:2 lead before Surrey hit back with their own 2:1 win. However, a 3:0 final set win to Kent secured the victory 8:4 to put Kent in second place, again in a good position to make national finals qualification.

Kent Ladies

Kent Ladies needed to win against their Surrey opponents to maintain second place in the table and with it the opportunity to get back to national qualification. Things didn’t start the way captain Fane would have hoped, as they lost their first four frames to go 4:0 down. However, they turned this around significantly by the end of the set, taking a 7:4 lead by winning seven in a row. They continued to battle and took the second set 6:5 for a 13:9 halfway lead. Both the third and fourth sets also went the way of the Kent Ladies with 7:4 wins, ending the match with a 27:17 win. Hannah Bevan took the winning frame for the ladies’ team.

Jan Spinner won 4/4, whilst Jo Miles, Jo Herrington, Erin Gannon, Karen Riches, Barbara Taylor and Mel Clements all won 3/4.

A Team

This was meant to be the day that the Kent A team stepped forward to national qualification following a very up-and-down season. Kent started the day in second place, three points in front of their Surrey rivals, so the win would have taken them almost out of reach. However, Surrey had other ideas. Kent flew out of the traps and took an 8:3 lead in the first set. All was looking well until a few missed pots presented Surrey some opportunities, from which they were clinical. Surrey took the second set 8:3 to even things up, and there was definitely a feeling of shell shock in the Kent ranks. Indeed, in the 33 frames that followed the first set, Kent would only take 10 of them, meaning the Surrey team took the match 26:18.

After such a bad day at the office, it seemed sensible that team captain Jasper Simmonds kept the team back to have a conversation to establish what had gone wrong. However, although the day was bad, Kent still remain in second place, now only on frame difference. That still means national qualification is in the hands of the Kent team if they win their last two games.

Charley McDowell, back from his serious thumb injury, delivered 3/4 alongside Dave Fernandez and Jack Galloway.

B Team

The Bs maintained their charge for national qualification and, more importantly, the Region 7 title with a 25:19 win over Surrey. With Aaron Bhat replacing the injured Steve Mullins, who recently underwent successful elbow surgery, the squad still had his support as he turned up to cheer on his teammates, showing the bond within the team.

The Bs have all but qualified for the nationals next year, and Sunday started emphatically with 8:3 and 16:8 leads. However, a slight cause for concern was the near capitulation from such a dominant position, allowing Surrey back into the game and pulling within a frame at 20:19. Kent were reminded in the captain’s debrief that these moments in games will need to be managed better going forwards.

Fortunately, the last five frames all went Kent’s way, allowing for a well-earned victory, albeit with a few moments of trepidation.

Notable mentions:

  • James Goldsmith 4/4 – the team were pleased for James finally finding his feet and putting in a dominant performance (he even cracked a smile).
  • A host of 3/4s from the team, with special notes for Ritchie Bell (looking more like his old self after recent struggles) and World Champion Andy Redsull, who continued his fine form from Ireland.

The Bs now look to next month, with a crunch game against Sussex likely to decide the Region 7 title.

C Team

The Kent C team took a significant step towards securing the title by beating their Surrey opponents 24:20 in a hard-fought win. The C team started slowly, losing the first set 7:4, but recovered by winning the next set 6:5. At 12:10 down at the halfway point, the Kent side stepped up a notch to take the third set 7:4 and move ahead 17:16. In the fourth set, the opportunity came for Ben Morgan to win the match, and he did just that, with the rest of the team following in his footsteps to take the last four frames. This put Kent top of the table with two games to go.

Summary

The total frame score today was 161:107, evidencing the gap between the squads. Seven out of eight matches were won, the only blemish being the A team’s loss.

The next match takes us to Sussex on October 12th, where many of the season’s twists and turns will be finalised. Having the opportunity to get all eight teams to national qualification is very pleasing and demonstrates the ability within the squad.

Finally, from both ends of the age scale, I must mention Andy Redsull – part of the Over 60s World Championship winning team with England – and Jake Lloyd, leading player in the Under 23 section at the World Championships. Never too old to win a world title for the first time, never too young to start winning big titles.

Stay safe until next time.

Best wishes,
Wilbo

Kent v London 10/08/2025

Match Report

A Team

An unusual event unfolded at the start of this match as, usually slow starters, Kent bolted out of the blocks to dictate the match with a 9:2 first set win. Kent lost the next two sets 6:5 as London rallied. At the end of the 3rd set Kent led 19:14 and went on to take the 4th set 7:4 for a convincing 26:18 win. Kent now sit in 2nd place in the division, three points ahead of Surrey, who visit Chatham in the next match. No 4/4 today, but solid performances all round from Ash Hind, Adam Bassoo, Wilbo, Jasper and Jamie O’Donnell, who all got 3/4. Jamie O’Donnell is settling into his own game nicely.

B Team

The Bs returned to winning ways against London with a solid performance culminating in a 24:20 win. The Bs managed to edge the first two sets 6:5 and 7:4 respectively to lead 13:9 at the halfway stage. London fought back, aided by some errant displays from Kent and fine pool from London, to win the 3rd set 7:4. However, a key run of seven frames on the bounce put Kent on the hill, which Mitch Standen—superb all day—converted to take an important victory.

Key Performers:

  • Mitch Standen – When he’s on it, he’s pure class. 4/4
  • James Albert – The surprise package who just keeps delivering this season. 4/4
  • Jamie Gamble – Arguably our best player all season; barring a break and dish against him, he likely would have walked away with another 4. 3/4

With Berkshire’s surprise loss to Hampshire, Kent are likely a win away from national qualification. With Berkshire and Sussex facing off next month, Kent’s eyes are firmly on the regional title, sitting just a point behind Sussex going into round eight of fixtures.

C team

A very tight match ended in a 26:18 win for Kent C. The first two sets were shared, with the scores at the halfway point 11:11. Good frames were played by Lucas Keepin on his debut and Jamie Fenech with two good clearances.
The third set was again tight, with London leading 17:16 at the conclusion, so all to play for moving into the final set! Kent then turned up the heat, storming the last set 10:1 to take the match away from London. Highlights included an excellent cut black by Paul Cox and a solid clearance from Bill Rase.

Outstanding on the day were Michael Cairns and Barry Johnson, who secured 4/4, and a great debut from Lucas Keepin.

The win secures top spot for Kent by two points, with good frame difference providing a nice cushion, though there is still work to be done to secure the title.

Ladies

“Just ruthless” was Captain Julie Fane’s description at the end of the ladies’ match. It certainly felt like that as Kent Ladies steamrolled London 37:7. They wasted no time, rushing into 10:1 and 10:1 wins in the first two sets to lead 20:2.

Things didn’t improve much for London as they lost the last two sets 9:2 and 8:3. The win puts Kent Ladies back into joint second with Surrey in the race for the nationals, with Surrey their next opponents at home. Four players managed 444: Mel Clements, Karen Riches, Vanessa Ledger and Captain Fane herself.

Seniors

Kent Seniors’ run of three straight victories had pulled them back into contention for national qualification, but they faced a London team that had beaten them in the last three meetings. Wilbo shuffled the pack in a bid to get the game done early, and the plan worked with an 8:3 first set win. Kent went on to win every set, with good pool on show—including a long table double by Graham Thrower, captured on the live stream. After the 3rd set, Kent led 21:12 and closed the match with another 7:4 set win. Final score: 28:16. Kent now sit 3rd in the table, level on points with Surrey, their next opponents.

Three players hit 4/4: Lee Crowhurst (11:12 in his last three matches), Bill Rase and Gary Kingsnorth. Well done all—the team are now showing their real form with four wins in a row.

Under 23s

London came into this game leading the division and looked set to extend that lead after taking the first set 4:1. Kent showed grit, hitting back with their own 4:1 win to level at 5:5. London again edged ahead, winning the 3rd set 3:2 to lead 8:7 going into the final set. However, the national champions produced another great finish, taking it 4:1 for an 11:9 win to go top of the table by a point. Four players got 2/4, with James Goldsmith edging out at 3/4.

There was no game for juniors or the over 60s (concession).

With all teams winning, all eight Kent sides remain firmly in the running for the top two spots and national qualification.

Next Match

Chatham Pool and Snooker Club will host Surrey in the next round, with several important fixtures. Lee has confirmed that even more tables could be streamed in the future, so everything is looking positive for Kent.

Good luck to all Kent players representing their countries at the World Championships in Ireland in the coming weeks.

Berkshire v Kent 06/07/2025

Match Report

Kent travelled to Berkshire, having had to shuffle the pack across almost every team. However, it gave team manager Willie Anderson an opportunity to assess both the leadership within the squad, as well as the potential opportunities for the future of Kent County Pool!

Seniors

First up in the morning were the seniors, and Willie Anderson reminded his players of last season’s victory over Berkshire, plus their resilience in the last two matches. Today was not the day to stand back and admire your opponents.

Berkshire started strongly, with their big guns taking them into a 3:0 lead. However, Wilbo had shuffled his pack to strengthen 1-11 and, by the end of the set, Kent were winning 6:5. The start of the second set saw Dean Coppen, Barry Johnson and Graham Thrower take out Berkshire’s top 3, and this inspired the team to go on and win the set 10:2 to lead 15:7! Berkshire were always going to fight back, and again their top 3 won their frames, but resilience in the Kent team meant they only lost that set 6:5.

The final set was all about winning, and vice-captain Martin Prime won the frame to seal the victory. Kent went on to win 27:17, moving up to 9 points in the table. Now in 4th place, but only 3 points off top spot – back in the race!

Wilbo (4/4) had strong support throughout the team, with Lee Crowhurst (so nearly 4/4!), Steve Jepson, Bill Rase and Gary Kingsnorth all delivering 3/4. A particularly cool finish by Graham Thrower was noted in set two.

Juniors

Going on the long trip to Berkshire without the best two players in our original 2025 squad could have been a daunting task. However, the lads, led by vice-captain Liam McGrath, made light work of it and ran out comfortable winners – 26 frames to 10.

It continues to be my pleasure to watch Liam, Mason, Slok and Jack develop as young men, as well as pool players. I hope they go on to form the backbone of the Kent junior team for the next few years.

Everyone chipped in today, with Liam playing a captain’s innings with a full set of 4/4, matched by Michael and Kieran, and supported by Lucas and Jack, who took 3 frames apiece.

Player of the Day – Liam McGrath

No August fixture for the Kent boys – next up is 14th September, where we host Surrey.

C Team

A very flat performance saw Kent C lose to Berkshire for the second time this season, this time 25:19. There was plenty of run favouring Berkshire, but also a lot of frames left on the table by the Kent team, with missed chances in all sets – always disappointing when you know you should have taken more.

Berkshire led throughout the match and enjoyed a 13:9 advantage at the halfway point. A strong third set saw Kent trail by just one frame, 17:16.

However, the usual Kent strong finish wasn’t there, and Berkshire ran away with the final set 8:3 to win 25:19.

Strong showing from Jamie Fanech (3/4) and Man of the Match Bill Rase with a full house (4/4).

Kent remain top on frame difference, and the title is still very much in our hands.

Thanks to the four seniors who stepped in to give us a team on the day. Bill Rase and Barry Johnson have agreed to play for the rest of the season, providing stability needed to win the division.

B Team

Kent were hoping to beat Berkshire – always tough opponents – to take the lead at the top of the table. However, it wasn’t the team’s day, and Captain Faz left disappointed, though reassured that the league is still in their hands, being only a single point behind Sussex.

The B team lost the first set 6:5, then immediately levelled at 6:6, but that was unfortunately as close as it got, with Berkshire taking the second set 8:3. The third set went similarly (7:4), before a last set win by Kent (7:4) ended in a 25:19 loss.

No full houses today, but four players delivered 3/4 – Jamie Gamble, Steve Mullins, Gavin Webb and James Albert.

I’m sure the team will bounce back in their next match to reclaim their potential as league winners.

Ladies

Following their loss to Hampshire, it was important for the ladies to bounce back and lift the squad. Hollie Potter was called up for this match and would have enjoyed the experience of playing at this level as she develops her game.

The ladies started brightly with a 7:4 first set win, then capitalised with a second-set 9:2 win to take a halfway lead of 16:6. The ladies were in no mood to offer Berkshire any hope today, extending their lead with an 8:3 win in the third set. Karen Riches took the frame that sealed the win. Berkshire managed a consolation 6:5 final-set win, but Kent ran out comfortable 29:15 winners.

Barbara Taylor led on the table with Karen Riches, delivering 8/8 between them, ably supported by Mel Clements, Jo Miles, and a back-to-form Jan Spinner and Julie Fane (each 3/4).

Under 23s

Our Under 23s are national champions but are also going through a transition. So, going to Berkshire and winning is always a good result.

Kent lost the first two sets 3:2, trailing 6:4 at halfway. They won the third set 3:2 to close the gap to 8:7. Kent then won the first two frames of the final set. Although Berkshire grabbed one back, Kent took the last two frames – James Goldsmith and Jake Lloyd – to win the match 11:9.

Kent now sit second, two points behind London, who they play next. Big game ahead.

Top performer – Callum Britt (4/4). Well played Callum.

A Team

Team captain Jasper Simmonds had shuffled the pack before the match to revitalise the A team, but was left three players short in the run-up to the game. In came Jack Galloway and Charley McDowell, along with a call-up for talented junior Finley O’Shaugnessy.

So – points to prove across the board, with the main question being: could we finally beat the machine that is Berkshire A?

Of course, Kent can compete with anyone, but inconsistency has plagued the team this season. Things started brightly with a 7:4 first-set win. Berkshire – multiple national winners for a reason – fought back, took the second set 6:5, and led 13:12.

However, Jake Lloyd pulled Kent back level before a majestic finish from Finley, over Giuseppe Dimperio, gave Kent a 14:13 lead. Kent went on to win the tight third set, with Wilbo nailing a tough black to finish 19:14 up.

It got tight again, with Berkshire winning 5:7 in the final set. But Steve Ritchie took the frame that won the match, and Kent landed a superb 24:20 victory – proving they’re still in the hunt for a national spot.

Jasper Simmonds (4/4), Jake Lloyd (4/4), with Jack Galloway and Steve Ritchie (3/4 each), means Kent move into second place in a tight group.

We welcome our good neighbours London for the next match on 10th August. Until then – best wishes and keep practicing!

Hampshire v Kent 08/06/2025

Match Report

Kent Over 50s kicked off the day in bottom place but were buoyed by a win last time out. There were a few changes to the team for various reasons, with Chris Freelove and John Fowler stepping in to support.

Thrower and Wilbo got the team off to a strong start, putting Kent 2:0 up. At the end of the first set, the team held a slender 6:5 lead, which extended to 9:6. However, Kent’s Achilles’ heel struck again as Hampshire won the next seven frames to take a 13:9 lead.

The Kent team didn’t fold. At the end of the third set, only a single frame separated the sides, with Hampshire just ahead at 17:16. The final set was nip and tuck all the way, and it came down to Barbara Taylor playing the last frame for the win. No surprise then–when given the opportunity, she stepped up and claimed the match for Kent 23:21.

The seniors may still be sitting in last place, but they are only four points behind Berkshire at the top, with their next match against the Berkshire outfit.

No 4/4s today, but G-Unit, Wilbo Jeppo, Bazza, Barbara, and Bill all won 3 out of 4 frames each to help haul the Kent side closer in the league.

Over 60s

The Over 60s team have played well all year under the captaincy of John Fowler, and this day was no different. A 3:0 whitewash in the first set was followed by 2:1, 2:1 wins before narrowly losing the last set 2:1.

The result: an 8:4 win for Kent, with Andy Gee claiming a perfect 4/4 for his team. Kent now sit joint top with Berkshire, who they play next.

A team

Kent A didn’t get the result they wanted and missed the chance to move into second place in the table. They started brightly, winning the first set 7:4 and led for most of the day but failed to build a healthier advantage.

At the end of the third set, Kent led 17:16 and then pushed the lead to 22:19. Unfortunately, they couldn’t close the match out, and Hampshire managed to steal the last three frames to earn a 22:22 draw – well-deserved, despite being outplayed for much of the day.

That result leaves Kent A in third place on 7 points, two behind Surrey, with Berkshire leading the table with a clean sweep of 15 points. With qualification still in Kent’s hands, it’s off to Berkshire next time out.

Adam Bassoo played well to claim 4/4, with Ash Hind, Wilbo, and Jasper supporting strongly with 3/4 each.

B Team

Kent B delivered an emphatic victory, beating Hampshire 27:17. A tight first set saw Kent edge ahead 6:5, followed by two 7:4 wins to extend the lead to 20–13. Dave Coakley secured the winning frame for the B team.

Steve Mullins returned to form with a perfect 4/4, while Jack Galloway, Phil Horley, Gavin Webb, and Andy Redsull all chipped in with 3/4 each. Kent now sit in second place, one point behind Sussex and three ahead of Berkshire.

C Team

The Kent C team are top of their section, three points ahead of Berkshire in second. They raced into a 7-:4 lead, followed by another 7:4 set, and then a dominant 9:2 third set–winning the match by the end of set three!

They may have taken their foot off the pedal in the final set, losing it 6:5, but still ran out comfortable winners, 28:16. Jamie Fenech, Barry Johnson, and Chris Freelove all contributed perfect 4/4 performances to secure the result.

Ladies

The Kent Ladies needed a win to regain top spot but sadly couldn’t get the result they wanted, narrowly losing to Hampshire Ladies 23:21. Hampshire now lead the division on 15 points, with Kent and Surrey tied in second.

Hampshire led 13:9 at the halfway mark and extended the lead to 20:15, but the Kent Ladies dug deep to fight back to 21:20. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be their day, as Hampshire held their nerve to close out the final frame and take the match.

Barbara Taylor led the team with 4/4, supported by Mel Clements, Vanessa Ledger, and Amy Cook, who each won 3/4.

Looking ahead…

Kent v Sussex 11/05/2025

Match Report

With Kent missing their inspirational and motivational leader, Willie Anderson (who ran the Bristol half marathon in just over 2 hours), Farron Rowe took the helm and led the teams against the Sussex sides, themselves trying to solidify their positions at the top end of the divisions.

A team

Following last month’s last frame defeat to Surrey, Kent needed to win this tough match to keep things regarding qualifying in their own hands. It was a tough start with the team going 4:2 then 8:5 down. By all accounts from team captain Jasper Simmonds the team dug in and there were a few gritty frames to stay in the match. By the end of the second set the A team were leading 12:10 thanks to a Steve Ritchie’s last frame win in the second set.

However, a 3rd set loss (Achilles heal) meant it was only the margin of one frame up at the start of the final set so Kent’s season was hanging in the balance. Time then for a strong end to the mat h which ended in an 8:3 set winning taking the final score to 25:19, a lot tougher match than the match suggested but Kent gaining the upper hand on Sussex when it mattered.

Adam Bassoo, Sean Kirby, Jasper Simmonds, Dave Fernandez and Josh Patel all gaining 3/4 to bring the team home.

B Team

Crunch game for the Bs against the undefeated Sussex, however, the spoils went to the improved Sussex team and deservedly so. Kent never really got out of second gear and will be kicking themselves. The Bs were given a shrift dressing down post game to remind them of the expected levels and areas to improve. With a best frame difference in the region wins for the remainder of the season will ensure they are champions again so still in their hands. It’s not often the Bs are out bantered and especially at home is disappointing.

The Bs, missing Mullins and Charley, in a tightly contested game found themselves 6:5 down after the first set. A much improved second set taken 7:4 allowed the Bs the advantage at 12:10 before going into the last set 17:16 up. It looked for all money the Bs we’re going to grab the win with 2 huge frames from Gav Webb and Phil Horley to lead 21:19.

Sussex closed the game out winning the last 4 frames with 2 break dishes and taking advantage of some costly errors in other 2 frames.

Notable mention for James goldsmith who joined the Bs in a tough game. James played well and could feel slightly aggrieved with 1/4 but showed he has the game to really exceed at this level and on the whole was a pleasing outing on what was otherwise a rather drab day for the B team.

Jake Lloyd – after a little word in his ear from the skipper vs Surrey Jake is looking back to his best which can only be welcoming news to the team.

Player of the day Jamie Gamble who’s form all season has been pretty good I’m sure it won’t be long before an overdue call up to As. Jamie battled well and was the best player with 3/4

The skipper will be looking for a vast improvement however from everyone on and off the table vs Hampshire.

C Team

A solid 26:18 win for Kent C saw a return to form for Paul Cox (3) and Mark Brazier (3),

All 4 sets were won by Kent in the match with solid showings from Callum Britt (3) and Scott Woods (3)

A mention for Bill Rase who came in for 2 frames and won then both.

However top performer and man of the match goes to Finley O’Shaughnessy with 4/4 on his senior debut to add to his 4/4 in the under 23s, not a bad day when you get 8/8.

Well played Finley.

Over 50s

The seniors went into this game bottom of the table and on a long losing run plus were without the services of Richard Smith and Wilbo. A loss would essentially have ended the season after 4 games but with the support of two Kent Stalwarts agreeing to come in and Help the team a great result was about to unfold and give the seniors hope for the rest of the season. (Thank you Ian Kettel and G- Unit)

Marc Brazier and Lee Crowhurst put the team 2:0 up and Steve Jepson made it 3 before the first set finished 7:4 in favour of Kent.

By the end of the second set it was 15:7 and things were looking good. However, like the A team, this senior’s team also has an aversion to the 3rd set and at the end of the 3rd set they had suffered a 9:2 loss to be leading by a single frame. However, that English / Scottish connection of Brazier and Mac Crow were in no mood for letting this one slip and won the first 2 frames of the 4th set to take the lead 19:16, giving a bit of breathing space.

Reeling off the final set 8:3 meant a “convincing” 25:19 win and despite still ending the day in 6th place, are now a potential win away from 3rd place, which would bring the hunger this team needs back into contention. We hope they remember that they can win and this sets the season up for further positive opportunities.

Man of the Match Lee Crowhurst as in his own words  “I turned up at last” was gratefully received ably supported with 3/4 by Marc Brazier, Barry Johnson, Dean Coppen and Gary Kingsnorth.

Ladies

Following last months 22:22 draw it was important the ladies got he win they needed to stay within reach of Hampshire and they did just that with a fighting win over a resilient Sussex team. The first set was a tight affair with Kent winning it 6:5 before taking the second set 7:4 to stretch out for a 13:9 win. Back came Sussex to make it 13:11 before 6 frames on the spin took the score at the end of the 3rd set to 19:14. It was 20:17 when Hannah Bevan won to take the lead to 21:17 then Barbara Taylor and Erin Gannon, with 4/4 wins each sealed the win 23:17 before the Sussex team rallied a little to give a respectable 24:20 score-line.  That was Erin Gannon’s first full house and I’m sure now she has delivered more will come from her in the coming matches as she realises her potential under the watching eyes of Julie, no stranger to seeing lady’s talent across the Kent team over the years. Hannah Bevan and Jules chipped in, both getting 3/4 so let’s get ready for the big game in Hampshire in a few weeks, every body ready for that one?

Under 23s

The under 23 team delivered a convincing victory by winning 14:6. Finley O Shaughnessy won 4/4 frames alongside Michael Cairns, also 4/4 . the team took the first set 3:2 before extending that to 7:3 at the halfway stage. The Sussex team staged a mini fightback in the 3rd set by winning 3:2 but that stimulated the Kent team to take out the final set 5:0 to stay in touch with leaders London.

Juniors

Great performances across the board yesterday and every player contributed, even if they didn’t win a frame or only got one or two on the board.

Our first match without two of our ‘Senior’ juniors, as James and Fin took their respective steps up into the adult squad, and we still ran out comfortable 21:15 winners against a dangerous Sussex team. Liam stepped into the skipper’s role with ease, aided by Slok ‘Paperwork’ Patel, and the spirit in the team is definitely improving. It is great to see the youngsters like Slok, Mason and Jack being welcomed into the fold.

Special mention to Fin, who scored a perfect 4 from 4 in the C team, to add to his earlier full house for the Under 23s. Man of the match for the juniors was shared by Michael and Liam, who both led by example with 4 wins.

Over 60s

The Over 60s team went into this fixture looking to go into 2nd place with a win against Sussex who were currently occupying that spot.

In a tight opening frame our newly qualified English Over 60 was just edged out and we found ourselves trailing. A patient frame from the skipper drew us level winning from a difficult position. G man up next and a solid clearance put us 2:1 up & this galvanised us to push on taking each set by 2 frames to 1 running out 8:4 winners. Could have been a little better with Chief unfortunately kicking in off a full-length double on the black. Great team effort with Paul Cox giving us his support.

So, with all of that we have 3 teams winning their respective divisions, three in 2nd spot, one in 3rd and one in 6th.

Still all to play for but I suspect a couple of our teams will want to bounce back next time to prove a point while others will continue with their goal towards claiming top spot.

Next up the Shootout on Sunday 18th May at Spots and Stripes Redhill, top spot in the round robin goes forward to national finals in June which will be televised.

In the words of Josh Patel……….. Lets Goooooo Kent!!!!!

Surrey v Kent 13/04/2025

Match Report

Kent travelled across to their nearest rivals, Surrey, keen to see the new Spots and Stripes environment.

A Team

The A team, captained by Jasper Simmonds for the first time, called up Jack Galloway from the B team following some excellent early-season displays. However, a poor first set left the A’s trailing 7:4. They fought back, winning the next two sets 6:5, taking a 17:16 lead into the final set.

Jasper urged the team to focus and concentrate, noting that they had suffered losses in several third sets over the past seasons. Willie Anderson extended the lead to 18:16, and Pat Cunningham pushed it to 21:18, seemingly breaking Surrey’s spirit. However, a disastrous end saw the A team lose all five final frames, resulting in a 23:21 defeat.

Dave Fernandez was Man of the Match, delivering a faultless 4/4 performance. Willie Anderson, Jasper Simmonds, Josh Patel, and Adam Bassoo each contributed 3/4.

B Team

The B team set out to maintain their unbeaten start against a formidable Surrey side. Captain Faz was unimpressed with the team’s performance in the first set, as they ambled to a narrow 6:5 lead. However, the skip was relieved that, despite a poor showing, they were still ahead against a strong side, highlighting the resilience of this B team.

The second set was also shared at 6:5, but the standard of play rose dramatically—it was night and day compared to the first.

From the third set onwards, the Bs relaxed and took control of the game, winning 7:4 to lead 19:14. The fourth set was pure class, as they secured an 8:3 victory, completing a 28:16 triumph. The match was capped off in the final frame with a delightful escape and pot from snooker by captain Faz, wrapping up a truly commanding display.

Player of the Match: Ritchie Bell

Before the A team called up Jack Galloway—thoroughly deserved, by the way—Ritchie was originally the reserve but showed immense character and determination. He delivered a brilliant 3/4 performance, earning plaudits for his solid all-around play.

While no players managed 4/4, many contributed solid 3s:

  • Jake
  • Mullins
  • Ritchie
  • Phil
  • Redsull
  • Faz
  • Coakley

Special Mention: Jake Lloyd Jake has had a tough start to the season, underperforming or failing to get the expected results for a player of his talent. However, today, he was impeccable—he deserved a 4/4 performance. He was a level above most and received a quiet word from the skip: “Form is temporary, class is permanent.”

Jake’s season has well and truly begun, which can only complement the B team’s strong start.

Up the Bs! #BandOfBrothers

C Team

A solid 25:19 win for Kent’s C team, with three sets won 6:5. A commanding 8:3 second set was the catalyst for victory.

Standout Player: Ben Morgan with a 4/4 performance—well played, Ben!

Other strong performances included:

  • Chase East
  • Chris Freelove
  • Steve Jepson
  • Marc Brazier (returning to form)

All recorded 3/4 scores.

A big thank you to Steve Jepson and Bill Rase, who stepped in from the seniors to ensure a full team. Their combined 5/8 contribution proved invaluable.

Man of the Match: Ben Morgan

Ladies Team

The ladies were involved in a right royal battle, with hardly a frame separating the teams from start to finish. The first two sets were shared, leaving the match tied at 11:11 at the halfway point.

Amy Cook put in a stellar 4/4 performance, and after the third set, the ladies were 17:16 up. They pushed on to 22:20, but sadly, our all-conquering team couldn’t quite get over the line, finishing 22:22 in a fantastic contest.

Strong contributions from:

  • Erin Gannon
  • Mel Clements
  • Barbara Taylor
  • Jan Spinner

All recorded 3/4 scores.

Juniors

A dominant 28-8 victory for the juniors! However, it’s important to note that several players will age out at the end of the year, meaning younger squad members must step up. Six players will be moving on, marking both the end of an era and the start of a new chapter.

Top performers:

  • James Goldsmith (Junior European Champion) – 4/4
  • Lucas Keepin – 4/4
  • Olly Mitchell – 4/4
  • Mason Coles – 3/4
  • Slok Patel – 3/4
  • Kieran Bruce – 3/4
  • Finley O’Shaughnessy – 3/4

Seniors

The seniors were looking for their first win of the season. Things started brightly, as they led 11-9, but disaster struck when they lost the next 23 frames, 18:5, leading to a crushing 27:17 defeat.

This team needs to turn things around quickly, or their season may slip away.

Masters Team

The masters took an early 1:0 lead but soon found themselves on the back foot, trailing 3:1 and 5:4 after the third set. They rallied to lead 6:5, but had to settle for a draw in the end.

Under 23 Team

The under-23s had a solid contest, finishing 10:10. They lost the first set 3:2, recovered to 5:5 after the second, and edged ahead 8:7. However, Surrey fought back to secure the draw.

Well done to Jake and Finley, who both recorded 3/4 performances!

The real Jasper Simmonds was presented with the manager’s player of the year trophy following the game against Surrey

Overall Squad Report

After three games:

  • Some teams are smashing it
  • Others are showing strength
  • A few need to do better

As manager, I’m pleased with the overall standards and professionalism of the squad. It’s inspiring to see our passion for the game and long-term plans taking shape. I’m proud of what we’re achieving together.

Thank you to all captains, vice-captains, and players for your commitment!

I won’t be with you next month, but Farron Rowe is my delegated squad manager for the day. I’ll continue handling communications leading up to match day.

Next up: Sussex at home on May 11th
